Gaston Police
The Gaston County Police are the main law enforcement agency for the county. The County Police was created in the late
1950's in which the patrol and enforcement powers were divorced from the Sheriffs Department, due to a scandal, and created
what was then the Gaston Rural Police. Gaston County is only one of two counties of the 100 in NC that have a split
sheriffs dept. and county police. Today, they are simply know as the county police which serve 190,000 county residents. County
patrol unit call signs are based upon which region they serve ( 1 Adam 3 or 2 Baker 4 meaning they are an Adam team in the
first zone or a Baker team in the 2 zone with the last digit identifying the particular unit). Sergeant units are David units.
The county also has award winning ERT (SWAT), bomb teams, and K-9 units.
